The overarching goal of the Lakes Monitoring Working Group is to advance the health and resilience of lake ecosystems in the Nechako, Stuart, and Takla Watersheds by collecting critical data on lakes through water quality monitoring.
Thanks to the Canada Water Agency, Upper Fraser Fisheries Conservation Alliance, Real Estate Foundation of BC, Nechako First Nations and other partners the NWR is steering several lake projects across the watershed.
These projects represent a partial implementation of the NWR's Large Lakes Monitoring Strategy. Knowledge-sharing and training activities are being built into all aspects of implementation and include robust paleolimnology work on salmon bearing large lakes across the Nechako (e.g. Stuart, Takla, Trembleur) as well as others which have seen substantial degradation in recent years (e.g. Nulki-Tachick).
The NWR continues to support monitoring program design (partnerships with Takla Nation and Nak'azdli First Nation), connecting various projects though active engagement and hosting meetings and contributes to the collection and storing of data ('Nechako Portal').
By hosting monthly Lakes Monitoring Working Group meetings, as well as facilitating other touchpoints, the NWR provides a space for collaboration and coordination of projects and activities in the watershed.
The Lakes Monitoring Working Group developed a Large Lakes Monitoring Strategy (LLMS) for the Nechako Watershed. More information on strategy development and implementation visit:
