Youth engagement is a key function of the Nechako Watershed Roundtable to plan for the future of the Nechako Watershed. Through the Youth Engagement Committee, the NWR aims to support youth engagement for the long-term, in a way that is meaningful and valuable to youth. The NWR recognizes the importance of youth engagement being youth led and strives for opportunities to share youth voices, strengthen relationships within the watershed, and build a valuable team of individuals that are passionate about the health of the land and water around them.
In addition to supporting youth engagement work throughout the Nechako Watershed, the Youth Engagement Committee also facilitates its own projects, including the completed NWR Youth Video Project, NWR Youth Canoe Trips and organization of BC Rivers Day and other events. The committee provides opportunities for Core Committee and Roundtable members to engage with youth as future partners and colleagues with the support from community partnerships.
By engaging youth in project-based work within the Watershed, the Youth Engagement Committee has the potential to be both an educational tool, and an opportunity for youth to be involved and heard in their communities. To reflect a strong commitment to meaningful youth engagement, the Youth Engagement Committee is working towards annual visits to schools within School District 91 & 57, sharing knowledge, gaining insight and providing opportunities for youth to be involved on a regular and long-term basis through volunteering, attending events or joining the committee.

Siobhan Klassenn
Hello! My name is Siobhan, and I'm in my fourth year of a physical geography degree at UNBC. I was born and raised on the traditional unceded territory of the Saik'uz First Nation, on the shores of Sinkut Lake near Vanderhoof, BC. I have a deep love and respect for the Nechako River, and I have long been involved with the NWR and other initiatives like the KOH Learning Program and the Youth Advisory Council for the Fraser Basin Council. I've spent the last four summers working for the Nechako White Sturgeon Conservation Centre in Vanderhoof, where I was extremely privileged to work with the endangered sturgeon and spend time on the beautiful Nechako. I'm looking forward to working together to increase youth engagement in the watershed and engage in meaningful discussions surrounding watershed health.
